Mother Seton currently educates 26 international students from China. In addition to following the college preparatory or honors curriculum, Chinese students also take ESL classes to assist with language and cultural transition. ESL, Spanish teacher, and Director of Admissions, Mrs. Karla Giron spearheaded a program called “Peer Pals” to assist the international students in this transition. Peer Pals is comprised of both international and American students. In addition to learning more about American culture, Chinese students also share about their own values and traditions.
On January 30th, Peer Pals hosted a Chinese New Year celebration. All students and faculty were invited to attend the event where Chinese students cooked and shared traditional Chinese dishes in the Family and Consumer Science kitchen. During the morning liturgy for Catholic School’s Week, Miss Christine Danelson, Music teacher and School Social Worker, also led the Seton Ensemble in singing a Chinese folk song entitled “Mo Li Hua” (English translation: Jasmine Flower). Mother Seton is very proud of its community of diverse students, who bring their unique cultures to the school.
